Summer Safety for Solo Women: Tips for Staying Protected and Confident

Summer is the season of sun-soaked adventures and the chance to create lasting memories. As a solo woman embracing the world one journey at a time, your safety and confidence are paramount. So, before you head out on your next escapade, arm yourself with these empowering tips to ensure a safe, fulfilling, and truly unforgettable summer.

Stay Alert and Aware

Your first line of defense is always awareness. It may seem like an intangible skill, but your intuition and situational awareness can be your most potent allies. Crime increases exponentially during the summertime and your awareness must increase to match that. Tune into your environment and trust your instincts. If something or someone feels off, don’t dismiss it. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Prepare in Advance

As the saying goes, “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.” When it comes to your safety, leaving things to chance isn’t an option. Research your destination thoroughly – know the safe zones and potentially risky areas. Plan your itinerary, including the places you want to visit and the routes to get there. It’s also a good idea to share your plans with a trusted friend or family member.

Travel Smart

Whether you’re road-tripping, taking a train, or flying to your destination, keep safety at the forefront of your travel plans. Be mindful of your belongings and aware of your surroundings in busy transport hubs. If you’re driving, ensure your car is in good condition before you set off, and plan your route to avoid desolate areas, especially at night. If traveling with a firearm, educate yourself on reciprocity laws for your CPL and what kind of requirements there may be when crossing over state lines. If you’re not bringing your firearm with you, what other items will you bring to defend yourself with?

Choose Safe Accommodations

Your accommodation should be your safe haven – a place where you can rest and recharge without worry. If you’re the thrifty type and looking to save money, do it smart. If an extra $50 will keep you out of an unsafe area, that is money well-spent. Look for accommodations with positive safety reviews and check their location. Is it in a well-lit, populated area? Do they have reliable locks on the doors and windows, and is there a safe for valuable items?

Stay Digitally Secure

In our connected world, digital safety is as important as physical safety. Keep your devices protected with strong, unique passwords. Be cautious when using public Wi-Fi networks, as they can often be less secure. Be mindful of the personal information you share online and avoid disclosing your location or travel plans publicly. It can be tempting to shout out to the world all the cool places you are visiting on social media, but if at all possible, do so when you get home. This remains true in your everyday life also, not just while traveling.

Show Confidence

Projecting confidence can often deter potential trouble. Walk purposefully, make eye contact, and don’t be afraid to speak up if you feel uncomfortable. Remember, it’s perfectly okay to say “no” or to leave if a situation doesn’t feel safe. Attackers are looking for easy targets. Don’t look like one.

Consider Self-Defense Training

Self-defense training can boost your confidence and equip you with valuable skills. Many organizations offer courses specifically designed for women. Not only will you learn practical techniques, but also how to read and respond to potentially dangerous situations. Choose an instructor or school who will teach you to fight dirty and to help you think outside the box.

Remember, being a solo traveler doesn’t mean you’re alone. There’s a whole community of women out there exploring the world just like you. Share your experiences, learn from others, and keep safety a top priority.

So go out there and seize your summer adventures with determination and joy. With preparation and these safety tips, you’re ready to confidently embrace the world and create a season of unforgettable experiences. Be brave, be strong, and let your summer be a testament to your independence and resilience!
