Introducing friends and family to your first pew

One of the most important aspects of gun ownership is safety. When you are introducing friends and family to guns, it is important to make sure that everyone is safe and knows how to handle a firearm properly. In this blog post, we will discuss the best ways to introduce your loved ones to firearms. We will also provide some safety tips that everyone should follow when handling a gun.

The first thing you should do when introducing someone to firearms is to make sure that they are comfortable with the idea of guns. If your family member or friend is uncomfortable with guns, it is probably not a good idea to force them to hold or fire one. You should also make sure that everyone has had some basic training on gun safety beforehand.

4 Rules of Gun Safety

Taking your family to a class or gun range for a safety briefing is the best way to ensure that safety is covered properly. Nearly every range will require an orientation for new shooters and they will happily cover that for you. Among other things, they will cover the following:

  • Always treat every gun as if it is loaded. Even if you know the gun is not loaded, always handle it as if it were.
  • Never allow the muzzle to cover anything you’re not willing to destroy.
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
  • Be sure of your target and what is beyond your target.

After your friends or family members have had some time to get comfortable with the idea of guns, you can start teaching them the basics of handling and shooting a firearm. This is where dry-fire practice and other home training comes in. Dry-fire is when you practice shooting your gun without any ammunition. This is a great way to teach proper handling techniques and to get used to how a gun feels in your hands without any real danger.

Go to the range

Once everyone is comfortable with the basics of handling a gun, it’s best to move to a range where you can practice loading and unloading live ammunition. As you go, name the pieces you are touching and what they do, where the safety is, and the mechanics of how a gun works. Be sure everyone is wearing eye and ear protection while you do this.

Do not be offended if your friends and/or family do not wish to fire your gun the first time you show your enthusiasm, or even the first time they go to a range with you. Remember, you’re doing this because you care about them and want to share your interests with them in a safe and responsible way. So take your time, be patient, and most importantly, have fun! They’ll come around eventually. And when they do it will be all the more rewarding.
